Play it cool...Ghoul

Hey

First popcorno post since February 2009. Now that's what i call fucking lazy.

So fuck it i cant be bothered to do that much of a re-cap I'll just start from something a little bit more recent.

So Bristol based 'the bastard squad collective' put on an amazing punk benefit show to raise funds for the annual Bristol (A)narchist book Fayre.

The mighty 80's legends ZOUNDS playing a huge mixture of there back catalog and even some new tracks. Totally amazing and I'm so happy i was able to see these guys play As i would have been to young in there hay day.

Highlight of the gig for me was running into a really pissed up guy outside of the croft venue, He went on to tell me that he has tonight for one night only broken a sobriety rule of 3 years or somewhat for this gig. That's pretty mental but the bit I'm mainly on about is what follows:

The band just started to kinda get things going with a bit of feedback and the above mentioned guy runs up to the singer guitar player and shouts 'your gay!' This frenzied the front man and he just starts power strumming his guitar like really thrashing it and the rest of the band join in banging the shit out of there instruments and screaming 'I'm gay, I'm gay, I'm gay and then they kinda just burst into song. It was awesome coz he was just totally out of it. I think he actually apologized at the end of the first song saying he kinda went off on one then. Loved it :) The band went on to play a storming set of all the classics.

The king is dead! All hail the king.

A little bit about one of my favorite British actors Ian McCulloch star of BBC hit TV 1975 series 'Survivors' The not so well known film Contamination and The incredible Banned video nasty Zombie flesh eaters and last but not least Zombie holocaust.

Survivors

The original or 'classic' Survivors was an 38 episode drama series with star Ian mcCulloch playing the role as Greg Preston. The show aired on BBC1 between 1975 and 1977. The opening episodes were first broadcast on BBC1 in April 1975 and immediately grabbed the attention and interest of the viewing public. In essence, the series concerns the aftermath of a plague which had wiped out over 99% of the world's population and the experiences of a group of individuals in England as they grappled with the post-plague world and the trials of day-to-day survival. Since its original broadcast the series has gained a cult following.

Zombie flesh eaters

A Zombie is found aboard a boat off the New York coast which belongs to do a famous scientist. Ian McCulloch plays the role of Peter West a journalist who travels to the Antilles with Ann the daughter of the scientist. On the way, they meet with with Brian, a ethnologist, and Susan. When they arrive at Matul Island, they find Dr. Menard, and discover a terrifying disease which is turning the Islanders into horrifying Zombies which devour human flesh and seem indestructible.

Zombie holocaust

In New York City a hospital worker is found to have been devouring bodies in the morgue. Morgue assistant and anthropology expert Lori (Alexandra Delli Colli) discovers he was from the Asian Molucca islands where she grew up. Dr. Peter Chandler (Ian McCulloch) investigates, and he and Lori discover that similar corpse mutilations have occurred in other city hospitals, where immigrants from this region are working.

Peter leads an expedition to the islands to investigate, where he liaises with Doctor Obrero. Included are his assistant George, George's eager journalist girlfriend Susan, Lori, local boatsman Molotto assigned by Obrero, and three guides. The crew are hunted by cannibals and zombies, the latter created by the sinister Doctor Obrero who is experimenting with corpses.

Lori is accepted as queen of the cannibals, and sends them off against the mad scientist and his zombie army.

we love wiki

Ian McCulloch (born Nov 18 1939) is a Scottish actor.

He is best known for his role as Greg Preston in Survivors. Though he debuted in the second episode, "Genesis", Greg would become the male lead for the first series, and got to show off his singing and guitar playing in several episodes. However, he was unhappy with the introduction of Denis Lill as Charles Vaughan, a male co-lead, during the second series. He wrote the seventh episode of the second series, "A Friend in Need", and was ostensibly written out at the end of that series. He would only appear twice in the third and final series, in the second episode "A Little Learning" and the tenth, "The Last Laugh". He wrote the scripts for both episodes.

He guest starred in the 1984 Doctor Who story Warriors of the Deep, and appeared in many popular television series in the 1970s, including Colditz and Secret Army. He can also be seen in the lead role of cult Lucio Fulci gorefest Zombi II, released in the UK as Zombie Flesh Eaters. The UK release was delayed as part of the 1980s campaign against "Video Nasties" - McCulloch would only see it years later recording a DVD commentary, and was shocked by the violence involved.

Onto the grub you say?

I'll Leave you with an awesome food recipe now:

Here is a very quick recipe for some vegan friendly Pesto. Goes very nicely with hummus and couscous. rock on. Or pasta dishes for that matter.

Get some basil leaves and some cooked garden peas.
mush them up in a mixing bowl. (maybe say the amount that would fill a large mug.

add some extra virgin olive oil
a dash of lemon juice
very finely chopped garlic (3 cloves)
salt and pepper (just a dash)
pine nuts.(table spoonful)

If you have a blender that's great but you can just mush it all together in a good bowl with a fork.

Enjoy and see you soon. Popcorno webzine xxx

ZEITGEIST THE MOVIE

Zeitgeist the movie - a direct link to stream the two movies at home for free and may i add hassle free, they streamed really quickly for me and were easy watching.(i really recommend addendum out of the two features) it focuses more on bringing the capitalist system down and an alternative to it.

If your not sure what these movies are, they are two informative two hour long films that offer an answer to some of the problems or questions that may arrive in your brain box in daily life, as an example Religion, what is it all about and more importantly where does it come from?

Money and value, again where does the basis of this monetary system come from and what is money worth and so on, The capitalist system that we live in and so on.

They really are worthwhile and offer some ideas and answers if you follow a political/activist direction.

DAISY CHAINSAW.
There dead and gone.

I love this review of the band (after they split) its written by the ledgendary 'mick mercer'

"They were like a Punk and Goth band combined, with some indie and grunge elements, which made perfect sense during the early 90's, and they had a massive commercial streak buried intrinsically inside every violently energetic or claustrophobically moody song. They were by far and away the best live band I ever saw, and also the one band who could have been massive internationally, but fucked it all up by making their debut album all but impenetrable, when "Love Your Money" made an immediate impact as a single, and they had other songs which could have been even bigger. They should have taken over from Nirvana as the noisiest band around who had charisma, commercial possibilities and were never likely to be toned down. Instead they went weird. [Katie Jane] would turn up at gigs wearing a blanket. She is unusual. In fact she looked like she could have come straight out of the pages of Sandman, if anyone's into comics." ~ Mick Mercer, Photographer

WALKING BACKWARDS...

Brightons finest 'radiomast' arrive in newport on thursday september 4th to play an eclectic live set.
At the newport meze lounge south wales. arrive for 8.00pm

In 1845 a well-equipped two-ship expedition led by Sir John Franklin sailed to the Canadian Arctic to chart the final unknown parts of the Northwest Passage. Confidence was high, as there was less than 500 km of unexplored Arctic mainland coast left. When the expedition failed to return, a number of relief expeditions and search parties explored the Canadian Arctic, resulting in final charting of a possible passage. Traces of the expedition have been found, including records that indicate that the ships became ice-locked in 1846 near King William Island, about half way through the passage, and were unable to extricate themselves. Franklin himself died in 1847 and the last of the party in 1848, after abandoning the ships and attempting to escape overland by sledge. While starvation and scurvy contributed to the deaths of the crew, another factor was significant. The expedition took 8000 tins of food which were soldered with lead. The lead contaminated the food, poisoning the crew. They would have become weak and disoriented--later stages of lead poisoning include insanity and death. In 1981, Dr. Owen Beattie, an anthropologist from the University of Alberta found signs of the expedition. This led to further investigations, and the examination of tissue and bone from the mummified bodies of three seamen, exhumed from the permafrost of Beechey Island. Laboratory tests revealed high concentrations of lead in all three bodies.

Ghost Mice coming back to newports premier indie venue le pub tuesday september 9th 2008
who the fuck are ghost mice you ask?

Ghost mice are probably one of the coolest anti folk punk style bands to be around at this moment and well ever!
Hailing from the states (indiana) i first found out about these cats chris and hannah when my mate was telling me about this cool 2 peice band who play acoustic folk punk and when they tour they literally hitch hike around to all of there tour dates, taking the occasional train when nessesary. They been kicking out music since like 2003 in this group. And have done a few releases on one of the members labels plan it x records. Many many tours and shows have been played. They pretty much always play for free and have awesome ethics and songs about totally positive ways of getting through life and making it through those hard times.

What i like about these guys is that there totally acoustic and they never play through mic's and amps and all that jazz, And there the kind of band you would find playing some back garden somewhere in the middle of nowhere or some crummy little venue. These travelling diy ethic musicians are keeping it so real, maybe we could all benefit by taking a leaf out of there book?

Easy japaneasy

bogulta - live review - cwlb ifor bach sunday 13th july 2008
Japanese duo bogulta on a hot summer night in cardiffs downstairs clwb ifor bach in support to the mighty dj scotch egg.
Holy fukcing wowzers. How good is this band? i went to this show knowing nothing about these two guys and the music they create and i walked away like a a fan would proudly walk away from a morissey concert proud in the knowledge that this band is a keeper.

Theres only two of these dudes NANI SATOSHIMA (Drums.Vox)
SYOGO YOSHIKAWA (Bass.Vox) but they make enough noise for ten guys playing in some brazzilian funk band. Haha on a serious note though, it was the most insane and hard hitting electro punk mish mash ive ever seen and heard and when little nani jumped up and started to pretend surf his kick drum and smoke his drum stick that pretty much sold it for me! so cool :) with song titles like scrap bog and so forth you cant really go wrong can you.
They looked as good as they sound dressed and wrapped up like radioactive candy bars and playing there instruments like there members of the mars volta they rocked my face.

They totally hammered through there set with the occasional stop to shout some broken english and thanking everyone, This band make me wish i lived in japan on the sole fact that i could see them more often, i wont lie i cannot give you an indepth review to the tracks they played etc as i aint too hot when it comes to my japanese. but have a look at there web links and see what you think and have a listen. if i had to sum them up i suppose i wud have to say its alec empire techno with a lil bit of doom esqe riffage and explosions. Either way its fun as fuck and super extreme noise punk techno, And its something different from your average joe sunday night concert.

Punk rock panini - a bit of respect to cardiff punks - Icons of filth

First things first icons of filth are very sadly no longer together as a band.
They finished up playing together officialy in 2004 when the lead singer frontman stig (andrew sewell) sadly passed away due to heart failure whilst playing a show. Im sorry i didnt want to start this on a sad note but then again for people who dont know the band, i'd say its pretty fucking important and everyone should know, Rest in peace mate. One of the saddest things is though is knowing the fact that you aint going see this band play live again and have the chance to totally submerge your self in there live show.

Anyways a bit of history, They put out there first release on a cassette tape in 1983 that was not on her majesty's service then followed up this release with several more namely:
Used, Abused, Unamused, Onwards Christian Soldiers, Braindeath, and The Filth and The Fury. Then they split, and several years later They reformed in 1999 to many peoples delight. then went on to release Show us You Care in 1999, and Nostradamnedus in 2002.

Icons of filth played a massive part in the u.k underground punk scene along side such bands like conflict and crass, flux of pink indians, honey bane, subhumans and many more. They were known well for the amazing artwork on album covers/patches and such alike and the stand out style lyrics and singing of frontman stig. Very much so in the vein of conflict boasting a lyrical assault on your ears and emotions.
Straight down the line angry anarcho punk band with songs ranging from animal and human rights and fighting against the government for our freedom and rights, Bands like this mean so much to me beacause they are so real, its the voice of the common man, the real man and it has so much we can all relate too and learn from you can tell in his lyrics that he was a man who cared deeply for people and a better way of life the lyrics are very special and they are backed up with riot inducing punk rock guitars and drumming.

I wish i could say i had the opportunity to witness them live but i cannot, which is a total shame.
Since the bands demise there has been many memorial concerts and a complilation album release featuring 34 bands from all over the world paying tribute. its availible to buy at www.profaneexistence.com
In other news now though stigs son calvin is active on the welsh punk scene and has put together a band with members of local hardcore anarcho punks rejected and currently has 'h' the icons of filth drummer playing for them in there band 'entitled' so keep an eye out for them.
